Shepherdstown, West Virginia, Papers [manuscript], 1808-1945 (bulk 1820-1880).

The papers pertain to several families and residents of the Jefferson County, Virginia, and later West Virginia, town including constable Milton J. Brown, merchant J. Markell, the Reverend John T. Hargrave, a Presbyterian minister, Dr. John Briscoe, Dr. John Quigley and other residents including Mrs. Henry Baylor Reinhart, R.C. Ringgold, and Kate H. Van Doren, and various members of the Swearingen and Owen families. Letters of Milton Brown concern the collection of debts. Papers of the Rev. John T. Hargrave contain sermons, accounts and receipts, and a personal journal. Topics include the settlement of the estate of the Rev. W.C. Walton, slave hiring, his churches at Middleburg, Va., and Shepherdstown, a religious revival in New Haven, Conn., and life in Bastrop County, Tex. Topics in James Markell's correspondence include news of family and friends; business and financial matters of Webb & Markell including a [woolen?] dyeing factory; slave sales and hires; Linden Hall, Lititz, Pa.; Reconstruction; and financial affairs of Alexander R. Boteler. Of interest are two letters discussing the financial consequences of secession and one describing an 1880 trip to Governors Island, N.Y. There are also ledgers from the medical practices of Drs. John Briscoe and John Quigley and from the settlement of Briscoe's estate; Quigley's diary containing religious reflections; law noteboks and account book of the Van Swearingen family; and a journal and minutes of the Shepherdstown Temperance Society.

Alexander R. Boteler (1815-1892) was Virginia political leader, congressman, and Civil War soldier. He graduated from Princeton College, Princeton, New Jersey. He was active in politics before the Civil War and much of his correspondence relates to the election of 1860 and the Constitutional Union Party.
